Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans will visit Egypt on Sunday for a two-day visit to conduct official meetings with government representatives and climate talks ahead of the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 27), which Egypt will be hosting in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
According to a statement from the European Commission's office in Cairo, Timmermans will meet with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad Abdel Aziz, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla, and Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said.
In addition to constructive talks ahead of the COP 27, Timmermans will bring up discussions on a Mediterranean Green Hydrogen Partnership to enhance communication on topics of mutual interest, such as the transition to clean energy, energy efficiency, green growth models, energy diversification, sustainable finance, carbon markets, and adaptation.
On 7 April, Egypt hosted representatives of the World Bank to discuss the upcoming COP 27 forum.
During the meeting, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad met Mari Pangestu — the Managing Director for Development Policies and Partnerships at the World Bank —and discussed cooperation mechanisms in support of the COP 27 agenda.
The meeting also dealt with important topics and initiatives that will be presented at the climate conference and the latest developments in the preparation of the Climate and Development Report prepared by the World Bank in a number of countries, including Egypt.
On 10 November 2021, it was announced that Egypt would host the COP 27 in 2022, marking Egypt's intent to support the race against climate change.
The conference will address climate financing, the priorities of developing countries, and the updated national contributions of states.
