Egyptian government discusses role of NGOs in fighting climate change Government meeting addresses biogas, green economy, and rationalization of resources
Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Minister of Social Solidarity Nevin El-Kabbaj held a meeting with a number of NGOs working in the field of environment, to discuss the preparations for the climate change conference (COP 27) scheduled to be held this year in Sharm El-Sheikh. The meeting witnessed a review of the contributions made by NGOs working in the field of the environment during the past period, including bioenergy generation, biogas, green buildings, green economy, rationalization of water and energy use, waste recycling, environmental awareness, and the establishment of a platform that includes partner NGOs in the field. During the meeting, the Minister of Environment, stressed the importance of coordinating efforts between the Ministries of Environment and Social Solidarity to unify the message put forward regarding Egypt's hosting of the COP27, highlighting the need to pay attention to educating individuals about the nature of climate change. She further explained that there is an overlap in many special activities between the Ministries of Environment and Social Solidarity, which achieves integration, as in the initiative launched by the Minister of Social Solidarity "Bar Aman – Safe Side" to protect fishermen and provide them with tools to practice their profession. For her part, the Minister of Solidarity stated that it is important to develop a unified vision for the contribution of civil society to the issues of environmental sustainability and the marketing of the green economy as one of the pathways out of poverty. Al-Kabbaj added that through the electronic system of NGOs, the Ministry of Solidarity can monitor NGOs working in the field of environment with their various classifications.
