Madbouly inspects VACSERA factory as locally made COVID-19 vaccine rollout materialises Egypt seeks to recover its local vaccine industry and expand regionally, says PM Madbouly
Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has visited the vaccine factory of the Egyptian Holding Company for Biological Products and Vaccines (VACSERA) in the 6th of October City. The first batch of the locally produced vaccine against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was delivered to vaccination centresnationwide on 25 August. The vaccine was produced through a cooperation agreement between the Chinese company Sinovacand VACSERA. During a press conference on Monday, Madbouly said that the country was preparing for the production of eight different types of vaccine. He noted that Egypt sought to restore its ability to locally manufacture vaccines through VACSERA factories after the previous halt. The government planned to make a qualitative leap in the local capacity of vaccine production. "The production capacity of this factory [VACSERA] is expected to reach 3 million vaccine doses per day or an average of 1 billion doses annually," Madboulyadded. This could be achieved through cooperation with international vaccine companies. The Prime Minister stressed that the state also planned to export local vaccines to other African countries and the entire region after achieving self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, Madbouly warned of the fourth wave of COVID-19 pandemic, calling on citizens to follow precautionary measures. During the visit, Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayedsaid the COVID-19 vaccines factory was established on an area of about 6,000 cubic metres. It was part of the VACSERA complex, with a total area of 60,000 cubic metres. The complex will be fully operational by the end of the year. Zayed also explained that the production capacity of the vaccines factory is about 24,000 doses per hour, the highest amount in the Middle East and Africa. The complex would become a regional hub for the manufacture and export of vaccines to African countries. The Minister of Health stated that VACSERA was well-equipped to produce various types of vaccine in cooperation with major international companies in this field. Moreover, Heba Wali, Chairperson of VACSERA, said the new factory comprised eight central laboratories equipped with the latest devices for measuring production quality and testing manufacturing inputs and the final product according to the standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The factory also included cold rooms for preserving the vaccine in its various production stages. The total storage capacity of those cold rooms reached 150 million doses. They were equipped with an electronic monitor to ensure safe storage.
