Telecom reporting is to receive a boost in Ghana as the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) announced on Friday that it was partnering with telecom giant MTN Ghana to improve reporting on the sector. According to the foundation, the goal of the project is “to enhance the media's role in creating public awareness to foster greater public interest and contribute to issues relating to telecommunications operations.” For MTN, the project give their company the opportunity for journalists to learn and explore “new concepts about the ever-growing and changing telecommunications industry.” It will also be a great conversation starter, MFWA said, in order to entice journalists in the country to report more often on the daily happenings at telecom operators in the country. “The project will therefore help fill gaps by building the capacity of selected journalists to enhance their knowledge and skills for more effective coverage of the industry in Ghana,” MFWA said in a press release announcing the project. “Most importantly, the project will encourage media managers to designate telecoms reporters in their respective media who will specialize in the field,” they added. Reporting on the telecom sector in recent years has grown, but is still a long way off from reaching levels desired by both reader and telecom operator alike and the new initiative should enable the beginning of a relationship with companies and the press.
