Kabul(dpa) – The United Nations said Saturday that more than 3,000 civilians were killed in Afghanistan last year, the highest annual toll since the fall of Taliban regime in late 2001. The annual UN report said 3,021 civilians, an increase of 8 per cent over 2010, were killed during the war in 2011. “Afghan children, women and men continue to be killed in this war in ever-increasing numbers. For much too long, Afghan civilians have paid the highest price of war,” Jan Kubis, UN especial envoy to Afghanistan said. The report blamed Taliban insurgents for about three-fourths of the civilian death toll.
