CAIRO: Three former Ministers and the former Secretary General of the ruling National Democratic Party were arrested on Friday. The news was welcomed by many Egyptians, who held the four in almost as low a regard as Egypt's former president, Hosni Mubarak. A video showing the officials being taken from a police vehicle to the infamous Turah Prison was widely circulated on Facebook and Egyptian news sites. The four were detained pending investigations. MENA news agency said that the former officials were being questioned on charges related to corruption and money laundering. Among the detainees is steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz, who also served as the Secretary General of the NDP; former Minister of Tourism Zoheir Garana; former Minister of Housing Ahmed Al Maghrabi; and finally, the ex-Minister of Interior Habib Al Adly, whose Ministry is accused of being involved in torture crimes and deliberately pulling out during the beginning of revolution to cause fear and spread a state of lawlessness and vandalism as a tactic to curb the outbreak of protests. The four officials will be held in custody of the prosecution for 15 days pending investigations. The four officials have denied the charges. The Attorney General has already banned the officials, among others, from traveling and has frozen their bank assets. A few days ago, hundreds of policemen protested in Cairo and other Governorates calling for an immediate trial of Habib Al Adly. BM
