US: Animal welfare activists on both sides of the river rally around Proposition B's stronger breeding regulations
The ferociously emotional fight over Proposition B may directly effect new regulations for dog breeders in Missouri, but its impact is deeply felt across state lines.
Animal rights activists in Quincy are speaking out about the petition-driven Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act as well, saying the regulation of dog breeders in Missouri affects pet owners and advocates just as much on this side of the Mississippi.
“It doesn't affect the laws in Illinois, but since we're right on the border, it does affect Quincy,” said Jane Holt, director of Paw Pals, a Quincy nonprofit that offers supplies and veterinary care to low-income pet owners.
Animal Defense League banner on Hawthorne Bridge: “OHSU: Stop Killing Monkeys Now!”
Animal rights activists stretched a 60-foot banner across the Hawthorne Bridge this morning targeting the Oregon National Primate Research Center at OHSU.
In support of National Primate Liberation Week, the Portland Animal Defense League hung a banner that read “OHSU: Stop Killing Monkeys Now!” for morning commuters to see.
“It's just pretty much animal abuse that's happening here, but they're calling it science,” said Stephanie Boston, an Animal Defense League volunteer. “We're in a campaign to let people know what their tax dollars are funding.”
UK: 6 Animal Rights activists to be sentenced
Six animals rights activists, including one from London, who intimidated companies linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences in an attempt to close down the animal testing lab will hear their sentences next week.
Judge Keith Cutler said he wanted the weekend to consider the verdicts for Sarah Whitehead, 53, Nicole Vosper, 22, Thomas Harris, 27, Jason Mullan, 32, Nicola Tapping, 29, and Alfie Fitzpatrick, 21, after hearing mitigation on their behalf. The six were all members of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC).
Winchester Crown Court has already heard how they waged a wide-ranging international conspiracy of intimidation against a host of supply companies to force the closure of Cambridge-based HLS using SHAC as a front. Action included the homes of staff and offices targeted with realistic hoax bombs, criminal damage and abusive telephone calls. Threats of violence were also used to force companies to cut links with HLS.
Canada: An Animal Rights Group Wants the NCC to Stop Killing Rodents
The National Capital Commission is laying rat traps that contain poison, and a local animal rights group is crying foul.
People in Confederation Park this morning have feelings in stark contrast to most voters on the CFRA Soundoff webvote (see left) who say get rid of the rats.
In the park today, there's a different take.
One man walking his dog says, “I think it's probably unnecessary. He walks his dog in Confederation Park everyday and says, “(the dog) would go after a rat, and I've never once seen a rat.”
Malaysia: Umno's ‘cheap shot' at animal rights ruffles feathers
Animal rights and welfare groups today demanded an apology from Selangor Umno Youth delegate Zuinuri Zainal, who had accused them of attempting to incite public hatred against the government.
