Egypt's Industry and Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir inspected on Sunday the construction site of Alstom's new industrial complex in New Borg El Arab, Alexandria, part of efforts to localise railway manufacturing, the ministry said in a statement. The 40-feddan site will host two factories aimed at producing railway components and rolling stock. The project is expected to create about 950 direct jobs once completed. The first facility, covering 13 feddans, will manufacture electrical systems and components including signalling equipment, control circuits and wiring, with foundation works starting in two weeks. The second, spanning 27 feddans, will produce metro cars, trams, light rail vehicles, monorail units and high-speed trains, the statement said. Minister El-Wazir said the complex reflects President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives to attract global firms to invest in Egypt's rail industry, and marks a "turning point" in the country's efforts to localise heavy manufacturing in the transport sector.
