Egypt's Qena Governorate will begin operating a 1-gigawatt solar power project by mid-2026, part of its strategy to become a fully green governorate, the regional governor said Tuesday. Governor Khaled Mahmoud Abdel Halim Abdel Aal made the announcement during a session at the Egypt Mining Forum in Cairo, noting that the project will supply electricity to the national grid and support Egypt's broader shift toward renewable energy. "This is one of the largest solar energy projects in the region, and it reflects our commitment to clean energy and sustainable development," Abdel Aal said. He also highlighted Qena's investment potential, pointing to its combination of agricultural and industrial zones, growing urban centers, and its strategic location on the Red Sea via the port of Safaga. He said this positioning makes the governorate a key link between Upper Egypt and international trade routes. The announcement comes as Egypt seeks to expand green infrastructure across its southern regions and attract both local and international investment in energy and industry.
