Norway's Scatec to build $5.7b wind farm in Egypt
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 01 - 05 - 2024

Scatec, a Norwegian energy company, is moving forward with a wind power plant project in the West Sohag region boasting a capacity of 5 gigawatts, backed by foreign direct investments amounting to 5.7 billion dollars, as stated by the Egyptian Cabinet on Wednesday.
The site for the project has been officially received, marking the commencement of technical studies. This project is part of Scatec's broader plan to transition towards a clean fuel-based economy, with five important projects currently under review. These include a large-scale project for electricity storage batteries and solar power production with a capacity of 1 gigawatt.
Another project aims to convert one of Egypt's largest aluminium factories to rely on renewable energy, with the goal of significantly reducing carbon emissions.
The first phase of this project involves establishing a solar power station with a capacity of 1 gigawatt, enabling the factory to replace 58 per cent of its electricity needs from the national grid.
The Norwegian firm is also planning for establishing a green ammonia project in one of the northern governorates, with an annual production target of 150,000 tons. This production will not only benefit local fertiliser factories but also will export the surplus several to European factories, thanks to an export agreement signed by Scatec.
In addition, Scatec is in talks with one of the world's largest companies to establish a factory for producing components of electrolysers for green hydrogen production in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone).
