US operable refining capacity remained essentially unchanged at 18.4 million barrels per calendar day (b/cd) as of January 1, 2025, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) said Monday. This marks little movement compared to the previous year. No major refinery expansions or ownership changes occurred between January 2024 and January 2025, unlike the previous year, which saw significant projects such as ExxonMobil's Beaumont expansion. The three largest refiners—Marathon, Valero, and ExxonMobil—each reported capacity increases of less than 1 per cent, largely due to small process improvements. Motiva's Port Arthur facility regained its position as the largest US refinery by calendar day throughput, while Marathon's Galveston Bay refinery remains the largest by stream day capacity at 665,000 barrels per day. The report includes 132 operable refineries, unchanged from 2024, and adds Pasadena Performance Products, a new alkylate-producing facility near Houston. LyondellBasell's Houston refinery, which shut down in March 2025, was still operational on January 1 and is therefore included. The report provides both calendar day and stream day capacity metrics, with stream day values typically about 6 per cent higher due to assumptions of continuous operation at full output.
