The Cairo Criminal Court is due to issue verdicts on 5 July in a corruption case involving three senior figures from the former regime. Verdicts will be handed down on former Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid, who has fled the country, Helmy Abul Eish, the former chairman of the Industrial Modernization Center's Administrative Committee, and Adham Nadim, the former director of the center, who has also fled the country. The three men are charged with profiteering and squandering public funds. On 27 August the court will hold its first hearing in the trial of former Housing Minister Mohamed Ibrahim Suleiman and four of his assistants, as well as business tycoon Magdy Rasekh, also on corruption charges. On Wednesday, Rachid's lawyer Gamil Saeed presented a check for LE2 million to the court, which is the amount of public funds the minister is alleged to have squandered. “Rachid paid for his official trips from his own pocket and donated his salary to charity,” Saeed noted. “It is unimaginable that such a man would profit from his position.” Translated from the Arabic Edition
