Ahmed Nazif, the Prime Minister, said the government would, in cooperation with NGOs, adopt a strategy to develop uncharted areas. The strategy would draw maps of these areas to prevent their spread and criminalize residence in unsafe slums. These remarks were said by Nazif during a meeting at his office in the Smart Village yesterday to discuss the strategy. The meeting was attended by Abdel Aziz Hegazi, former prime minister and head of the General Federation of NGOs and Foundation (GFNF). The strategy aims to provide alternative plots of land in case the government failed to use the land of these uncharted areas after demolishing the unsafe buildings. The strategy would be developed in coordination with the governorates and ministries concerned, to provide the residents of these areas with alternative housing units. The residents should not circumvent the law or misuse their right in getting alternative housing units, Nazif said.
The meeting was also attended by ministers of finance, housing and local development, in addition to Ali al-Faramawi, board chairman of the Fund of Developing Slums. Following the meeting, Magdi Radhi, the Cabinet's Spokesman, said Nazif stressed the importance of improving services and increasing job opportunities through various axes, such as the establishment of commercial, educational, health and sport projects.
Hegazi said the GFNF intends to establish a national assembly in each governorate at least, to coordinate efforts aiming to develop slums. Al-Faramawi reviewed the strategy details and focused on developing the unsafe areas, confirming that priority will be given to developing 29 unsafe uncharted areas nationwide.
