Egypt's Minister of Water Resources Hani Sewilam and Minister of Supply Sherif Farouk discussed efforts to modernise sugar mills and reduce their environmental impact on water resources, the Cabinet said on Monday. The ministers reviewed the current and future steps to address waste generated by sugar production, aiming to align with environmental standards at Egypt's nine major sugar factories, including those in Edfu, Kom Ombo, Armant, Qus, Nagaa Hammadi, Dishna, Abu Qurqas, Gerga, and Hawamdeya. The meeting emphasised adopting closed-loop water recycling systems to cut consumption and mitigate pollution. Both ministers called for short- and long-term plans to rehabilitate the factories and implement environmental remediation. They also proposed commissioning a specialised consultancy to identify optimal solutions, including the possible use of cooling towers and upgrades to wastewater treatment units, while coordinating with development partners as needed.
