Dozens of Egyptian journalists on Wednesday staged a vigil in front of press syndicate calling for the release of Mohamed Al Battawy, Al Bawaba News reported. Al Battawy, journalist in the daily Akhbar Al Youm, was arrested June 17 allegedly over joining an outlawed group, a police official told the state-run MENA news agency. The family of the jailed journalist said their son had been 'kidnapped' and they did not know where he was or what the accusations he faced were. The protesters chanted slogans against what they called ‘police aggression' against journalists, calling on authorities to unconditionally set all jailed journalists free. Al Battawy's lawyer said his defendant was delivered a 15-day pending detention, according to Al Battawy's sister. Last week, the newly elected press syndicate head, Yahia Qallash met with Egyptian editors in chief to discuss the deteriorating relationship between journalists and interior ministry.
