Mansoura Court acquitted on Thursday a father of Egyptian girl called Suheir el-Batea who died after she has undergone a female genital mutilation, and doctor Raslan Fadl who performed the illegal operation. For the first time in Egypt, Fadl was charged of negligence and running a medical center that does not meet the health requirements, which led to the death of the victim. This is the first trial in Egypt over charges of female genital mutilation since FGM was announced a crime six years ago. A considerable number of Muslims considers FGM, or (Tahara) in local language, as one of the Islamic instructions. However, Egypt's Parliament passed a law in 2008 criminalizing the operation after the death of two girls which triggered appeals from human rights groups. Even though, the operation is still common among many families in villages and remote regions.
