Soccer on the side: Zizou at his battering best
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 28 - 11 - 2012

Our Egyptian flying winger Ahmed Al-Mohamadi and his team Hull City suffered a surprising defeat ah home at the hands of Burnley as they lost by a single goal. Al-Mohamadi had an excellent game at the right flank yet again and was a menace to Burnley's defenders throughout the 90 minutes. He sent several dangerous crosses into the box but unfortunately for him and his team no one was there to convert any of them. Hull City drop to fifth in the league table after the defeat.
Still in England, Adam Al-Abd was still sidelined as Brighton drew 1-1 at home against a well organised Bolton side. Al-Abd injured his hamstring several weeks ago so he was still missing from the match squad and couldn't prevent his team from conceding a last minute equaliser as they dropped two valuable points at home. Reports indicate that Al-Abd could be back for his team in a week or 10 days. The draw means Brighton stay eighth in the league table.
Al-Abd wasn't the only Egyptian missing from his team's match squad. Ahmed Hossam “Mido” also missed his team's game against league leaders Cardiff. After playing two weeks ago, Mido missed his second game in a row as he's yet to reach the peak condition to play week in week out. Barnsley played an excellent game against Cardiff but couldn't take any points from the game as they lost 2-1 at home. The defeat was somewhat expected as Cardiff is the best team in the league and the current league leaders. After four defeats and one draw in the last five games Barnsley lie in 20th place in the league table.
In Turkey, Amr Zaki's Elazigspor suffered a dramatic loss against Turkish giants Galatasaray at home. Galatasaray were leading by a single goal until the last minute when the drama started as Galatasaray's goalkeeper Muslera was sent off and a penalty was given to Elazigspor. Galatasaray had already made three substitutions at that point so a player had to take responsibility. Felipe Melo volunteered and guess what? He saved it! A dramatic loss that was hard to take for Elazigspor for sure. Zaki himself started the game but came off in the 54th minute as his side chased the game and tried to find an equaliser that never arrived. Elazigspor remain at the bottom.
In Italy, Ahmed Hegazi will be disappointed as he didn't see any action this week after making his debut last week in his team's game against Torino which ended 2-2 at Torino. Fiorentina's winning run stopped as they snatched a valuable equaliser five minutes from time against an inconsistent Torino side that fought so hard on the night. Unfortunately Hegazi watched from the bench this time but hopefully he'll be involved more in coming weeks. The draw takes Fiorentina to second place behind league leaders Juventus.
Off to Belgium where Han Ramzi faced reality this time around as he and Lierse endured a very tough night as they lost to Belgian Giants Standard Liege 3-0. Ramzi started his reign with a win and was hopeful of adding another three points this week but unfortunately his team were second best throughout the whole game and did not have any solutions in the final third which meant they nearly didn't threaten the opponents' goal at all. Ahmed Said Okka played the full game and had an average day but didn't commit any major mistakes while Al-Gabbas came on at half time but couldn't find the back of the net as his team didn't do any work in the final third to help him. The loss means that Lierse stays in 13th place.
Mohamed Zidan and his team Banni Yas played some breathtaking football as they thrashed Aagman 5-0. Banni yas and Zizou was at their very best as they battered their opponents throughout the whole game. Zizou scored the fourth goal from the spot after sending the keeper the wrong way. Overall he had a very good game and showed immense class with nearly every touch. Banni Yas remain third after this win.
Shikabala's Al Wasl continued their erratic form as they lost the second game in a row against Al Shabab in a game that ended 2-1 for the home side. Shika had an above average game and had a big hand in the goal his team scored as he played a magnificent through ball to Ali Abbas who had the easy task of passing it to Alvaro who slotted home in an open goal. Shika showed glimpses of his enormous talent but couldn't test the keeper directly and was more involved in the build-up of their goal attempts. The loss takes Al Wasl to 10th place.
AFRICAN AND ARAB: In Italy, Fiorentina's Moroccan star Monir Al-Hamdaoui scored a goal five minutes from time to snatch a point for his team away against Torino in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
In Spain, Angola and Valladolid star Manucho scored the only goal of the game as his team defeated Granada 1-0 at home.
In France, Marseille's Ghanaian star Jordan Ayew scored the only goal of the game as they beat Lille 1-0 at home.
Still in France, Ivorian star Lamina Kone scored a consolation goal for Lorient as they lost to Bastia away from home 2-1.
Evian Tunisian star Zohair Dhaoudi struck the only goal of the game as they defeated Rennes 1-0 away from home.
