Salafist presidential hopeful calls for conference on indicted activists Abou-Ismail issues calls for Saturday meeting in Dokki to discuss issue of indicted revolutionary activists, reiterates vow to release political prisoners if made president
Presidential contender Hazem Abou-Ismail has called for a general conference on Saturday evening at the Asad Ibn Forat Mosque in Cairo's Dokki district to discuss the ongoing investigation of influential political activists and media figures accused of “inciting hate” against Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and attempting to bring down the state. Abou-Ismail, a prominent Salafist leader, is calling on Egyptian political figures of all stripes to attend the conference to discuss how to deal with the issue. On Wednesday, complaints against twelve prominent revolutionary figures – including presidential candidates, activists, journalists, MPs and writers – were referred by authorities to Egyptian military prosecutors. A total of 712 complaints have been filed against a handful of activists, including presidential hopeful Bothaina Kamel; television presenter Yosri Fouda; MP Ziad El-Eleimy; MP Abul-Ezz El-Hariri; blogger Nawara Negm; revolutionary socialist Sameh Naguib; Wael Ghoneim, founder of the “We Are All Khaled Saeed” Facebook page; National Council Secretary-General Mamdouh Hamza; Kefaya founder George Ishak; writer Alaa El-Aswany; and television presenter Reem Maged. Abou-Ismail has declared that, should he become Egypt's next president, he would immediately order the release of all political prisoners and end Egypt's longstanding practice of referring civilians to military courts. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/36283.aspx
