Egyptian director Kamla Abouzekri's film A Day for Women has been awarded the Grand Prize at the 20th Festival du Cinéma Africain de Khouribga in Morocco, which took place between 9 and 16 September.
The story centers around a youth centre in a working-class Cairo neighborhood that establishes a women-only swimming pool day. The plot traces the social and personal repercussions of the move for the women involved.
The film stars Egyptian actress Ilham Shahin who is also the producer, with Hanaa Attia providing the script.
The film brought director Abouzekri back to the silver screen after a seven-year hiatus since her last film Wahed-Sefr (One-Zero).
A Day for Women also stars Nelly Karim, Nahed El- Sebaei, Mahmoud Hemeda, Farouk El-Fishawy, Ahmed El-Fishawy, Ahmed Daoud, Eyad Nasser and Hala Sedky.
The film premiered internationally at the 60th London Film Festival and had its Arab-World premier in November 2016, opening the 38th Cairo International Film Festival, with actress Nahed El-Sebaei taking the best-actress award.
It was then screened at the 13th Dubai International Film Festival, as well as other festivals worldwide.
Abouzekri's repertoire comprises the films Sana Oula Nasb (First Year Con-2004), Aan El-Eshq Wal Hawa (Abou Love and Passion-2006), Malak Wa Ketaba (Heads and Tails-2006), and the TV drama series Bent Esmaha Zaat (A Girl Called Zaat-2013) and Segn El-Nesa (Women's Prison-2014).
