Three Egyptian men were detained by police on Wednesday pending investigations into the brutal killing of a dog after a video of its slaying caused outrage on social media websites. The dog was reportedly killed as part of a deal to drop charges against its owner, after it bit one of the three attackers. The three suspects, aged 28, 29 and 32 – two of whom are butchers – are currently being investigated by police. The video showed the brown dog leashed to a poll before being struck by machetes and sticks by the three attackers until it died. The incident took place in Qaliubeya govenrorate's Shubra district. Egyptian animal rights advocacy groups condemned the incident and called for the punishment of the perpetrators.
