Egypt's El-Sisi orders forming of parliamentary election commission The commission will oversee parliamentary elections set to take place before the end of this year
Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued a presidential decree on Tuesday mandating the formation of a parliamentary election commission, state-run news agency MENA reported. The commission is set to oversee parliamentary elections taking place before the end of this year, the third and last step in Egypt's roadmap to democracy, which was implemented following president Mohamed Morsi's ouster last July. The commission will be headed by the head of Cairo's appeals court, as well as some of the oldest members of appeals and jurisdiction courts. Once the commission is formed, dates of the parliamentary elections are expected to be announced. Egypt's former interim president Adly Mansour passed the parliamentary law in June, days before the end of his term. According to the law, the number of seats in Egypt's House of Representatives will be decreased to 567 from the originally proposed figure of 630. Critics of the parliamentary law, passed in early June by Mansour, saythe law's individual candidacy system will allow figures from the regime of toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak to dominate parliament. Out of 567 seats in the upcoming parliament, 420 will be elected via the individual candidacy system, while 120 seats will be reserved for party lists. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/106316.aspx
