CAIRO: Muslim lawyer Ali today submitted a request to the ruling Egyptian military council urging the release of 15 Islamic leaders sentenced to execution in various cases, some of whom were convicted in the Asyut incident and the “Albania” case. The Albania case was a massive criminal trial in an Egyptian military court in 1999, where a principal Sunni terrorist from the 1990s was convicted. Ali claimed that the judges who convicted the imprisoned leaders were from the former regime, and those in jail were tried as a result of the emergency law and were unable to avail themselves of a legitimate defense.
