CAIRO: Strikes and labor protests in Egypt have increased notably in the recent period, according to Minister of Manpower and Immigration Ahmed al-Boraei. “All those who have demands go on strike or cut the [roads] until it becomes a habit,” he said. “This is unacceptable,” al-Boraei told Youm7. “The government will not negotiate with any protesting laborers until they stop their strike,” he said, adding that Egypt cannot stop the production cycle, especially during this serious time. Awlad el-Ard (Sons of the Land) Center said in its report about last September's strikes that there were 56 labor strikes represented in 20 sit-ins, included 254 injuries due to absence of security, carelessness and presence of food unfit for human use. Three workers were killed and 3,650 left homeless, according to the report. Arabic here.
