GHARBIA, Egypt: Popular television broadcaster Buthaina Kamel today claimed that her “nomination for president gives Egypt a civilized side.” Additionally, on her blog she wrote, “Buthaina Kamel winning the presidency means that our revolution succeeded” and “Buthaina Kamel's ascension to the presidency means a second revolution.” “Neglecting problems, like the slow investigation of the incidents in Imbaba and Abassiya, is a crime,” she added at a symposium in Tanta, Gharbia. Kamel said she was beaten by police forces who failed to protect demonstrators from former regimes figures and thugs. The participation of women in the January 25 Revolution speaks louder than those who do not respect women killed, detained and injured during the revolution, she added. She spoke about ridding the country of the brazenness of the former regime, characterized by remarks like “the Egyptian people are very lazy and do not understand anything except giving birth,” a quote from former Speaker of the Shura Council Safwat al-Sherif. When confronted with the accusation of receiving foreign training while studying with the April 6 Youth Movement, Kamel asked “if the training is to root out corrupt officials, where is the crime?” Kamel rejects the free party system and instead supports the mixed system. She argues that government, not just the private sector, has a role in solving problems like unemployment. After fair and impartial elections for the People's Assembly, the Council has a right to revise all conventions and laws – including the Camp David Accord and the export of gas to Israel, she added.
