ALEXANDRIA, Egypt: The arts center at the Library of Alexandria is holding a competition for the best design for a memorial to the martyrs of Egypt's January 25 Revolution. The center is providing electronic voting to encourage social participation. The library's art center received 19 designs for the memorial. Four designs were selected as finalists, and the public will choose the final design. Voting will be open until July 15. The first finalist was created by Ahmed Barakat. Barakat's memorial is a group of black marble panels which are symbols of the obstacles and tyranny that existed in Egypt for 30 years. Bronze sculptures through panels show hope after the revolution. The memorial includes some of the revolution's slogans. Marwa Alba designed the second finalist. It is a double-faced wall showing the changes after the revolution and the revolution's martyrs. The third was designed by Basem Fadel. His design shows a martyrs hanging from one hand, while the other hand holds a branch to represent hope and sacrifice. The forth memorial is by Mohamed Fadel. His design was inspired by human elements. It shows a mother of a martyr as a symbol of sacrifice. The public can vote on their favorite memorial here: http://www.bibalex.org/artwork/index_ar.aspx
