The U.S. State Department said that America remains committed to assisting Egypt during its current transitional period and democratization. It also stressed the importance of transparency and the rule of law. Regarding the recent violent incidents in Egypt, the State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, said that violence initiated by any party will not help in achieving the goals of the January 25 Revolution. Toner said the army was an example of neutral professionalism during the events that took place in Tahrir Square which led to the resignation of former President Hosni Mubarak. He said the army continues to run the country with this spirit and pointed out that Egypt is going through a difficult time economically and politically, and that it must maintain its cohesion. Toner said the American Embassy is trying to verify reports regarding the use of tear gas canisters during the recent events in Tahrir Square. He said Egypt's Prime Minister, Dr. Essam Sharaf, called for an investigation in this regard, and that Washington is waiting for the results of this investigation for further details.
