Prominent Egyptian businessman and Coptic Christian Naguib Sawiris has been accused of insulting Islam. Mamdouh Ismai, a member of the general union of lawyers, and 14 other lawyers have made a complaint to Attorney General Abdel Magid Mahmoud accusing Sawiris, founder of the Free Egyptians Party, of sullying Islam with caricatures that appeared on his Twitter page mocking bearded men and veiled women. The complaint said Sawiris published a cartoon on his Twitter account with two drawings of Mickey mouse: one veiled and the other bearded and wearing a galabiya, traditional Egyptian clothing. The complaint says the cartoon was intended to mock Islam because the beard is associated with the Prophet Mohamed and the veil is traditionally Islamic. The complaint demanded that the accused be investigated because he sullied Islam and the Prophet, threatening social peace.
