Hamburg missed out on the chance of going level on points with Bundesliga leaders Wolfsburg after slumping to a late 1-0 defeat to Stuttgart on Sunday. Towering striker Mario Gomez struck the winner deep in stoppage time. Hamburg keeper Frank Rost blocked a low drive from Thomas Hitzlsperger but could not save Gomez's powerful follow-up shot from inside the area. "I had already settled for a 0-0," Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel told reporters after the game. "But the boys wanted the win. We continuously tried to create chances and at the end we were rewarded." Hamburg are joint third in the table along with Bayern Munich on 51 points, three behind Wolfsburg. Stuttgart lie fifth with 48 points, just one ahead of a European spot.
