Petrojet kept alive their title hopes after capitalizing on Amir Abdul-Hamid's errors to salvage a late 2-2 home draw against Ahli in the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday. Ahmed Shaaban put Petrojet in front 14 minutes after the restart when keeper Abdul-Hamid failed to deal with his weak free-kick. An own goal by Petrojet's left-back Osama Mohamed drew Ahli level three minutes past the hour mark before Angolan winger Gilberto gave them the lead shortly after. Another blunder by Abdul-Hamid, who was consistently criticized for failing to fill the void left by Essam Al-Hadari, helped Petrojet's Amr Hassan equalize deep into stoppage time. Ahli, who would have edged closer to a fifth consecutive title if they defeated Petrojet, are still on top of the league table with 40 points. Second-placed Petrojet are five points behind the Red Devils, who still have a game in hand. Abou-Treika Injury Both sides were cautious in the first half as they barely created goalscoring opportunities. Petrojet slightly had the upper hand and could have grabbed the lead on 26 minutes after a defensive blunder by Ahli defender Wael Gomaa. Gomaa swiped at thin air as a pass slipped into the path of Ghanaian striker Eric Bekoe, who went clear on goal but failed to round Abdul-Hamid. Ahli received a major blow when star playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika was stretchered off with a twisted ankle after going down under a clumsy challenge by Hassan Gomaa. Abou-Treika had just recovered from a knee injury that sidelined him for five weeks.
Abou-Treika was injured He made way for striker Osama Hosni, who was introduced to support Flavio Amado and Mohamed Barakat upfront. Freak Goals The second half was a frantic affair with both sides finding the net through freak goals. The match was halted for around ten minutes due to power failure and when it resumed, little remained of the dull first period. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Shaaban's tame free-kick squirmed beneath the shaky Abdul-Hamid and into the net. Hassan gifted Ahli the equalizer in the 67th minute when he bizarrely side-footed a flick by his teammate Ali Kamal into his own net. Gilberto, whose pinpoint crosses rescued Ahli on numerous occasions this season, put Ahli in the driving seat seven minutes later. His right-wing free kick eluded everyone and nestled into the net past the stranded Ahmed Fawzi. Petrojet forwards tried their luck from distance more than once after observing Abdul-Hamid's poor reactions. They were rewarded in stoppage time when an attempted cross from Hassan flew past the badly-positioned Abdul-Hamid and into the back of the net. Watch the match's goals
