England superstars back under-fire Cole
Published in FilGoal on 12 - 10 - 2008

England veteran defender Ashly Cole was backed by his teammates, following an unusual slip-up in England's 5-1 victory over Kazakhstan that saw sections of Wembley booing him on Saturday.
Zhambyl Kukeyev scuffed a loose ball after Cole's clumsy pass and went on to score the visitors' only goal in a World Cup qualifier.
English ardent Fans did not forgive the 27-year-old for the mistake, despite the huge triumph.
On the other hand, his teammates stood up for him, condemning the football fanatics who had heavily booed off the former Arsenal man.
Rio Ferdinand, who captained England as John Terry missed the game, criticized the spectator's reaction, saying it was "shameful".
"It leaves a sour taste in your mouth," Ferdinand told Sky Sports Network.
"But I would like to think the majority of fans were the ones applauding him and trying to boost his confidence.
"I am sure the people who booed him will probably go home and, on reflection, maybe feel a little bit ashamed of themselves and hopefully won't do it again".
Frank Lampard echoed similar sentiments.
"It is a negative because, if I am honest, at the moment I think Ashley Cole is the best left-back in the world," the Chelsea co-captain said.
"I was very surprised. Ashley for me is one of the best full-backs in the world. He has been so consistent for a number of years. It was a little bit harsh."
England hit-man Wayne Rooney, on the other hand, admitted the players have been slightly depressed by the blunder.
"I think the players are really disappointed to be honest. We know that players make mistakes. It is part of the game," Rooney said.
"The fans should really get behind a player when they make a mistake and not boo them the way they did."
Furthermore, Coach Fabio Capello was quoted as saying he was flabbergasted on hearing the Fans booing Ashley.
"I couldn't understand the crowd booing Ashley Cole after he made a mistake," the Italian coach said.
"It is possible for one player to make mistake. It is very important that the crowd help him and not boo him.
"But the crowd was very strong for us. After the first half, they helped us a lot."
