Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello is set to leave the Spanish giants at the end of the season following a disappointing one-year spell, the club's president Ramon Calderon said on Saturday. "It was an unfortunate choice. The fans are not very happy due to some of our disappointing performances," Capello told Mexican newspaper Reforma. "Capello had to deal with a club that had won nothing for three years and that was ever going to be easy, but we were unlucky." The Italian tactician was appointed in the summer after he left Juventus in the wake of the Italian match-fixing scandal.
Calderon Capello, who guided Los Meringues to the Primera Liga title in 1997, failed to get Real back on track despite the arrival of a host of starts including Fabio Cannavaro, Emerson and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Real were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League and suffered an early exit from the Spanish Cup. The club's league hopes are slim as they lie third in the table with 48 points, five behind joint leaders Barcelona and Sevilla. Calderon revealed that he is targeting Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez as well as Getafe's German coach Bernd Schuster. "We spoke to Schuster right from when I was only running for the Presidency, but we are keeping an eye on Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho."
