The UEFA control and disciplinary body imposed a seven-month suspension on Valencia defender David Navarro after his violent conduct at the end of the Champions League game against Inter Milan last week. The Spanish defender sparked the mass brawl which involved more than 18 players from both teams after punching Inter defender Nicolas Burdisso, leaving him with a broken nose. The decision included a 156,000 Euros fine on both clubs as well as European game suspensions for five other players. Inter players Burdisso and Maicon have been handed a six-match ban while Ivan Cordoba was banned for three matches and Julio Cruz for two.
Valencia and Spain defender Carlos Marchena was also banned for four games for his part in the melee. The five players will have their punishment limited to UEFA club competition matches under the authority of the European governing body. However, UEFA will ask FIFA to extend Navarro's sanction in order to apply to all football competitions including domestic games and national team fixtures.
