Ryan Giggs struck a controversial goal late in the second-half to lead Manchester United to a 1-0 away victory over Lille in the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday. The welsh winger fired a quick free-kick into the back of the net three minutes from time whilst Lille keeper Tony Sylva was organizing his defensive wall. Lille players protested the referee's decision to allow the goal and threatened to walk off the pitch. The referee has also denied them an opener through Peter Odemwingie, who headed the ball home one minute after the hour mark but his goal was ruled out for an apparent push on Nemanja Vidic. United have now a commanding advantage over their French opponents when they play the second-leg at Old Trafford after two weeks.
