African champions Ahli celebrated their continental title with a thrashing 4-0 league victory over Petrojet at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday. Mohamed Sedik headed the opener home in the 18th minute and Emad Meteb doubled the lead with a low shot four minutes from the interval. Two opportunist strikes from Flavio Amado after the break completed the rout as Ahli registered their sixth win of the season. Ahli moved up to fourth place on 20 points, four behind leaders Ismaili, with three matches are still in hand. It was Ahli's first home match since winning the African trophy last week in Tunis, beating Sfaxien 1-0 with an injury-time strike from Mohamed Abou-Treika. Though, a low turnout estimated at only 15,000, not even close to half the number received the players in the Cairo Airport, gathered at the stands to celebrate Ahli's record-equaling fifth African title.
They carried giant posters featuring star player Abou-Treika and manager Manuel Jose in addition to a lot of banners praising the club and mocking its competitors. Ahli took the lead when center-back Sedik connected with Ahmed Shedid's cross from the left and powered a neat header home. The hosts had no troubles in dominating the pitch with their opponents defending in numbers and launching toothless attacks on the break. Meteb widened the gap in the 41st minute, drilling a low first-timer from the edge of the area into the far net after a poor clearance from the defense. Angolan forward Flavio, who is dubbed the unluckiest striker in the league, stretched the score line twice in the second period through opportunist efforts. In the 48th minute, he had a poor shot blocked by the keeper but the ball hit his body and completed its way towards the net despite an effort from a Petrojet defender to clear it off the line. Flavio doubled his tally nine minutes later when his weak shot squeezed easily under the hands of keeper Ahmed Fawzi to cross the goal line.
