David Beckham played has no plans to retire from the game in a two-year period as Real Madrid chairman Ramon Calderon announced, a spokesman for the English star said Wednesday. "As far as I know he has decided to retire in two years' time," Calderon told BBC Radio Five Live in an interview in English earlier on the same day. Real Madrid are in talks with Beckham for a two-year extension of his contract that ends in 2007 and the 31-year-old winger said he has never said he would quit by then. "This is a complete surprise to us. No one has ever discussed a retirement date," a spokesman for Beckham was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. Beckham suffer hard times this season as he was dropped from the English team squad playing the Euro 2008 qualifiers. Then he was relegated to the bench by Real coach Fabio Capello, who prefers to field Spanish international Jose Antonio Reyes in the right flank. However, Calderon is confident the former England captain will extend his contract with the Spanish side. "It would be fantastic if he would stay with us for the next two years," he said. "We need him. He's playing very well. The coach trusts him. We hope everything will be arrived at in the next 15 to 20 days to sign the new contract."
