Lomana LuaLua inspired DR Congo to a 2-0 victory over Togo in their African Cup of Nations Group B match on Saturday. The Portsmouth striker set up a goal for Tresor Mputu on the stroke of half-time before adding another in the 64th minute. The result put Congo at level with Cameroon on three points in first place in their Group B while World Cup-bound sides Togo and Angola share the trough with no points. Togo created more chances at the start of the game and nearly took the lead after 13th minutes when Mohamed Coubadja astonishingly shot wide from point-blank range after being fed by Cherif Maman.
Tresor Mputu Congo took control of the remainder of the game and wasted a host of chances late in the first-half before finding the net. Mputu latched on to a defense-splitting pass from LuaLua before exquisitely chipping the ball past onrushing keeper Kossi Agassi. LuaLua stretched the lead for his side four minutes past the hour when he sidestepped a defender before slotting home the second the slippery hands of Agassi. Congo players continued to raid the Togolese goal but saw their efforts repeatedly denied by the woodwork, defenders and keeper.
