Cape Verde could appeal the decision of FIFA to eliminate them from the World Cup qualifiers after using an ineligible player against Tunisia. The Blue Sharks were thrown out after making it to the final playoff, with Tunisia taking their place despite losing 2-0 in the decisive group game between both sides this month. FIFA made their decision after defender Fernando Varela violated a four-match ban he received in an earlier qualifier against Equatorial Guinea; who themselves used an ineligible player in the fixture and eventually forfeited. Cape Verde thought Varela's red card was annulled as the result of the Equatorial Guinea match was annulled. It remains to be seen how the Islanders will react as Tunisia have already taken their place in the 10-team final playoff.
