Unlike in presidential elections before the January 25 revolution, Egyptian people were filled with a new spirit when they went to the polling stations to cast their votes last week. People displayed signs of optimism and enthusiasm as they were given the unique opportunity to elect their new president. About 13 candidates competed to lead the nation amid economic and political problems, which threatened to tear Egypt apart. Ordinary citizens were filled with pride as they joined long queues under the scorching sun to take part in shaping the future of their children and the motherland. International monitors, NGOs and human rights organisations and foreign diplomats also lined up to praise the Egyptian nation and its army for arranging fair and transparent elections.
