Tomorrow, Egyptians will line up at the polling stations to elect the first post-revolution president. A big section of voters have made up their minds about their favourite candidate. But we have to admit that many Egyptians, often called the silent majority, seem to be undecided or are sticking to the tradition of deciding at the last minute. Nonetheless, the silent majority should appreciate several important factors in connection with their choice. The voters must be aware that Egypt is a large and influential country when it comes to regional and international affairs, and its president should live up to the great expectations. Therefore, dilettantes and poorly experienced candidates should not get any votes; otherwise they would discover that their tasks in the presidential office were too overwhelming and challenging. In addition to political experience, the new president should be the perfect example of moral, financial integrity and transparency. Otherwise, he will not be able to avoid the grave and shameful mistakes of his predecessors. The new president should give credit to the January 25 revolution for paving his way to the presidency. In other words, the new president should not make sentimental and rosy promises too difficult to achieve in the short-term – as he knows only too well. Accordingly, voters should carefully and wisely examine the qualities of each candidate before casting their votes. [email protected]
