BAGHDAD, Sept 8, 2018 (MENA) – Newly-appointed Basra Operations Commander Lieutenant General Rashid Falih vowed on Saturday to restore and maintain security in the governorate. In statements broadcast by Alsumaria news channel, Falih urged Basra residents to cooperate with security forces while carrying out their duties. Earlier in the day, Falih replaced lieutenant general Jamil al Shimary in this security post after a curfew imposed in the city was lifted. In statements to Alsumaria news channel, a security source said life was back to normal in Basra after a curfew has been imposed since Friday in the wake of violent protests that led to burning of buildings and public institutions. Earlier, protesters set fire to the Iranian consulate in Basra amid large protests against corruption and lack of basic services. Meanwhile, up to three members of Daesh terrorist group were killed Saturday in a blast that took place on the border between Diyala and Salahuddin provinces. The extremists belong to villages of Salahuddin province, the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) quoted an Iraqi local source as saying.
