Side effects, risks of Botox, fillers
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 18 - 04 - 2018

Cairo, April 18, 2018 - One of the biggest problems affecting the beauty of women is the appearance of facial wrinkles. This makes it important for them to look for ways to help them keep their skin fresh, even as they get older.
"Although we cannot stop the ageing process and the changes which accompany it, perhaps we can use certain methods to keep our skin young," according a point of view expressed by a group of women.
Dr Ahmed Fareed, a Professor of Plastic Surgery, noted that several techniques can be used to make wrinkles disappear, however some of these techniques can be risky and harmful, so women might do well to avoid them and to look for safer methods.
Although Botox is an efficient treatment for removing wrinkles by injection, the disadvantage is that the effect lasts only for a short while and the wrinkles reappear. Botox is effective for the period between three and six months and no more. Thus, a woman has to inject her face once again with Botox to get rid of the wrinkles.
According to Dr Fareed, fillers are substances injected under the skin to make it fuller. After an injection, the plumper skin shows fewer wrinkles and looks younger.
Skin is held tight and smooth by three critical components: collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. These chemicals combine to create a firm, spongy meshwork under the skin surface. This elastic structure keeps the skin surface smooth and firm. With age, the skin's surface loses its perfect baby-skin smoothness.
When the fillers plump up the tissue underneath the skin, shrinking the wrinkles, the skin becomes firmer, smoother, and younger-looking."However, though Botox has the ability to get rid of wrinkles on the face and fillers have the ability to fill several areas of the body and can be used as treatment for deep wrinkles
in the face, there are risks and side effects associated with the use of Botox and fillers," said Dr Fareed.
Botox side effects
"One of the most serious side effects of Botox is the spread of the material in the body, after the use of injections or cosmetics which contain it. Once this happens, the side effects can be poisoning leading to muscle weakness and vision problems," said Dr Fareed
There is also a risk of infection when the face is injected with Botox. If the doctor is not a specialist in the treatment or if he or she is inexperienced, there could be the danger of skin irritation, even fever and paralysis. Dr Fareed added that Botox injections cause the skin to sag, due to the frequent tensing of the skin, loss of sensation and slow muscle weakness.
Risk of fillers
Dr Fareed confirmed that cosmetic doctors have to be experienced because the procedures they undertake require accuracy and practice, to produce the best results.
He pointed out that the risks of fillers included bruises that do not go away, or subcutaneous lumps, when the material is not distributed correctly.
A very serious complication is blindness. This occurs when the filler is injected into an area near the eyes, causing an arterial blockage. Two other complications are skin allergy and facial malformations which occur when too much filler is injected, according to Dr Fareed.
