Pros and cons of cosmetic acupuncture
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 26 - 05 - 2013

Acupuncture facelift gives you a glow that radiates from deep within, its practitioners and advocates claim. This modality can enhance not only your physical appearance but also your overall health; acupuncture's apparent ability to improve a variety of skin conditions has now been documented in clinical studies.
Researchers have shown that acupuncture stimulates the flow of blood and energy through the skin in the face, thereby hydrating it, boosting the skin's supply of nutrients and oxygen, and thus reducing the signs of ageing, according to specialists.
The International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture published a report showing that among 300 cases treated with cosmetic acupuncture 90 per cent had shown positive effects with one session of treatment.
Chinese doctors have been using points on the face for thousands of years to help combat signs of ageing in men and women and to help skin conditions.
Cosmetic acupuncture is a holistic alternative to Botox and surgery and is an extension of traditional acupuncture, which stimulates and rebalances the body's energy channels and incorporates a facial treatment to improve blood circulation and lymph drainage.
Otherwise facial acupuncture works with fine needles stimulating energy points in the face and body, encouraging its systems to work harder " think of it as facial yoga it has been suggested. Active muscles maintain their tone for longer and the treatment will improve the skin's appearance and texture in the long-term, say acupuncturists.
In addition, practitioners of cosmetic acupuncture believe that it shrinks sagging, softens and smoothes outlines and erases shadow lines.
However, on the other hand, many critics, in this domain, working in mainstream dermatology and cosmetic surgery, do not accept cosmetic acupuncture as an effective treatment and regard it as a placebo effect. If you expect the treatment to work, you may think it has improved your skin, even if there's no actual improvement," they have observed.
Dr Khaled Drahem, consultant on obesity and thinness insists that acupuncture does not have the ability to improve skin appearance.
Acupuncture is based on a procedure that involves the stimulation of points on the body using a variety of techniques, such as penetrating the skin with needles that are then manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation.
Dr Drahem asserted that no studies have revealed that acupuncture can overcome facial skin problems such as sagging skin and wrinkles by tightening the skin and removing such problems.
"In the [acupuncture] technique needles are inserted into specific points in patient's body to deal with pain and treat chronic illess. These points generally lie along channels that run through the body. This technique may be done with or without a gentle manipulation or electricity to further stimulate", he explains.
The consultant mentioned that the respective ratio of patients who frequently use acupuncture to treat different illnesses is 65 per cent women to 35 per cent to men.
Acupuncture needles have developed over the centuries from the wooden needles that were originally in use into non- rusting metal needles so that when they are inserted in the human body they avoid unwanted reactions. Recently acupuncture needles have been produced that connect with laser devices to boost their effectiveness, Dr Drahem added.
He stressed that acupuncture has no adverse side effects if the practitioners are well qualified in this field.
