Egypt's Environment Minister reviews work agenda of Waste Management Regulatory Agency

Egypt's Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, presided over the sixth meeting of the Board of Directors of the Waste Management Regulatory Agency, on Saturday, to follow up on the progress of the work and put forward various challenges and reach the best ways to overcome them.
Fouad said that the draft budget for the fiscal year 2023/24 was approved after discussing it with the Ministry of Finance in accordance with Law 202 of 2020.
During the meeting, Tariq Al-Araby, the Head of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA) reviewed some of the activities implemented by the agency, the current status of the implementation of the waste management system since 2019, and the objectives of the strategic planning and action plan.
He explained that the plan aims to reach the recycling of 60% of the municipal solid waste collected in biomechanical treatment plants to produce Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and organic fertilizer, in addition to recycling 20% in thermal treatment plants to produce electric energy, and reducing the volume of waste that requires safe disposal from the collected waste to 20% to reduce the demand for new lands for safe sanitary landfills.
The Egyptian Minister of Environment was briefed on the latest developments in the implementation of infrastructure and operating contracts, the activities carried out and are being implemented in the governorates, the sites for offering investment in waste management, projects for converting waste into electric energy, the measures that have been taken and the results of the evaluation of the companies applying for qualification, the Egyptian companies qualified for the first stage and the contracting systems.
One of the most important functions of the Waste Management Regulatory Agency is to provide technical support to all government agencies, factories, establishments, and companies working in the field of integrated waste management, as well as actors in all stages of the waste management system, and to prepare training plans and packages to build their capabilities in that system.
