Environment Minister, UN Special Envoy discuss boosting joint cooperation
Published in Daily News Egypt on 24 - 01 - 2023

Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad met Mahmoud Mohieldin the High-Level Climate Champion for COP27, and the UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to follow up on the outputs and latest developments of the results of the previous climate conference on Monday.
The Minister of the Environment stated that Egypt, at the national level, has updated the updated National Contributions Plan 2030, and is also working to restore momentum again to the issue of climate change at the national level.
During the meeting, Fouad referred to coordination and cooperation with the host of the COP28, the UAE and the possibility of working on new initiatives or completing the initiatives that were launched through COP27, noting that the initiatives launched by the Egyptian presidency of the conference amounted to about 11 initiatives.
She also noted that the green investment file requires the activation of various strategies, such as the agricultural waste strategy, which aims to benefit from 40 million tons annually of agricultural waste by reuse and recycling, and the strategy of economies based on vital systems that we started last year to promote the uses of vital materials in various industries.
Moreover, the minister pointed to the establishment of the Green Investment and Climate Unit, to develop the best ways to integrate the private sector in environmental work.
For his part, Mohieldin explained that there is a need for coordination between all sectoral ministries, defining a working map in the next stage, and working on the outcomes of the COP27, by focusing on energy issues and highlighting the importance of the "NWFE" projects.
He indicated that the second phase of the competition for green and smart projects will be announced nationwide, in cooperation with the Ministries of Planning, Environment and Communications, in March, to give the governorates an opportunity to present and discuss projects and present them during the upcoming climate conference, COP28.
