Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi headed to Berlin on Sunday at the invitation of German Chancellor Olaf Schulz to participate in the Petersberg Climate Dialogue which will start on Monday, under the joint chairmanship of Egypt and Germany.
Ambassador Bassam Rady, the spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency, said that the summit paves the way for the upcoming COP27, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh next November.
He said that Egypt's invitation to co-chair this important forum comes in recognition of the vital role that Egypt has played in the framework of climate change negotiations over the past years.
President Al-Sisi will meet with a number of German officials, led by Schulz, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations at all levels, within the framework of the keenness of the two countries to strengthen cooperation and continue intensive consultations on issues of common concern.
The German embassy in Cairo said in a statement that the visit "reaffirms the depth of German-Egyptian relations and the common interest of both countries in deepening cooperation in the field of climate protection and stability in the Middle East."
It is worth mentioning that Germany has been organizing the Petersberg Climate Dialogue since 2009. This edition will witness preliminary discussions, approaches, and agreements on the climate summit that will follow.
On the sidelines of the visit, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries will be celebrated.
