Acting Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and Governor of Cairo Khaled Abdel Aal launched on Sunday the National Campaign for Vaccination Against Polio from the Nozha Family Medicine Centre.
The minister called on all families to head to the nearest health unit or a health team stationed near them to vaccinate their children and protect them from polio to preserve their health, stressing the availability of medical teams for the campaign in all medical centres and health units as well as in places of major gatherings.
Abdel Ghaffar added that the campaign will run from 27 to 30 March in all governorates of the republic, stressing the safety of polio vaccines and that the campaign will not conflict with routine vaccinations for children, alluding to the possibility of extending the campaign period if needed to ensure that all children are immunised.
Moreover, Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said that the campaign aims to vaccinate all children from one day to five years old residing in Egypt regardless of their citizenship as part of the periodic campaigns organised by the ministry to raise the societal immunity of children.
The spokesperson explained that the campaign's work is being carried out by 45,000 medical teams with a total of 90,000 individuals, who have been trained at the highest level, in addition to the central supervision teams in the ministry and the supervisory teams in all health directorates and departments, stressing that all preventive and precautionary measures are being taken against the coronavirus during the implementation of the campaign's work.
In 2006, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Egypt free of polio. The last case of polio recorded in Egypt was in 2004.
