Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a cabinet meeting on Thursday to follow up on the government incentives scheme for converting vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG), and the progress of the national strategy for electric vehicle (EV) production. The meeting was attended by ministers of electricity and renewable energy, petroleum and mineral wealth, finance, public enterprises sector, trade and industry, and military production, as well as the Chairperson of the Arab Organization for Industrialization. Hisham Tawfik, Minister of Public Enterprises Sector, presented the requirements and procedures for EV manufacturing, which would contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Meanwhile, the vehicle conversion to CNG would be more feasible than other fossil fuels (petrol/diesel), as the country has achieved self-sufficiency in natural gas production, he added. The Minister highlighted the steps taken in this regard, where coordination was made with the Ministry of Electricity regarding the price of electricity supplied from production companies and the costs for distribution to charging stations. Tawfik also presented different proposals for the EV production of all kinds (taxi, mass transportation, bus, passenger cars, and motorcycle) at the state's factories.
