Dozens killed in battle between Afghan army, Taliban close to Kabul
At least 40 Afghan soldiers, police officers were killed on Wednesday

The Taliban Movement seized control over an Afghan military base in a northern province just after days of its former attempt to seize control of the city of Ghazni in south of Kabul the capital of Afghanistan. Ghazni lies along the major Kabul-Kandahar highway.
Moreover, at least 40 Afghan soldiers and police officers were killed on Wednesday, in an attack on a military base, the latest in a series of deadly assaults on security forces, said Afghan officials.
According to the statement of the Afghan armed forces, Taliban fighters seized control on Monday, over a military base known as Camp Chinaya in a northern Faryab province, killing 17 soldiers and wounding 19 others, while the Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said that the movement killed 17 soldiers during the gunfire in the military base, while 57 other soldiers surrendered.
“Reports indicate that the casualty toll in Ghazni is immense,” the UN's special representative in Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto said Wednesday, adding, “unconfirmed estimates range from 110 to 150 civilian casualties. Reliable information indicates that the Ghazni Public Hospital is overwhelmed by a continuous influx of injured government forces, Taliban fighters and civilians.”
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced the sending of fresh water and electricity generators for trauma surgeries and delivered material for the management of remains, as about 20% of the population in Ghazni depend on the city water system, which has been down since the beginning of the fighting last week.
The ICRC is organising emergency water supplies by truck to cover the needs of about 18,000 people.
