Al-Sisi, Abbas discuss consequences of Trump Jerusalem declaration
Arab League calls on Trump to retract decision, calls UN to recognise State of Palestine

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi discussed with the President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday the latest updates regarding the US decision to relocate its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
In a phone call, Al-Sisi and Abbas discussed ways of reaching a fair solution that guarantees the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to build their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to a statement from the presidency.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, ordering his Secretary of State to take all necessary preparations to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.
Moreover, the League of Arab States called on Trump to rescind his decision regarding Jerusalem, and to commit to international law, according to the final statement of the urgent Sunday meeting of Arab ministers of foreign affairs.
The ministers said that Trump's move hinders efforts to achieve peace and leads to escalation, anger, and bloodshed in the region. They described the decision as null and void, dangerous, and as violating international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
They further announced that they will be in a status of ongoing convention, and will evaluate the situation in no more than a month to decide on the necessary steps, such as holding another summit in Jordan.
Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that Trump's decision raises questions over America's role in supporting the peace process between Palestine and Israel. He also added that the alteration in US policies undermines Arab confidence in the Trump administration.
The statement called on all countries to recognise the State of Palestine, based on the 4 July 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It also called the UN Security Council to issue a resolution affirming that the US declaration of Jerusalem as capital of Israel contradicts international resolutions, and has no legitimate impact on the status quo in Jerusalem.
