850bn cubic metre gas reserves in Zohr field
Published in Daily News Egypt on 22 - 11 - 2017

Zohr, a natural gas field, is the largest discovered field in Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea, with gas reserves estimated at 850bn cubic meters, according to Eni Company.
The Zohr gas field is an offshore natural gas field located in the Egyptian sector of the Mediterranean Sea. The field is located in the Shorouk concession, a concession with an area of 3,765 sqkm, the development rights of which were won by Eni in 2013. The field is estimated to lie in an area of 100 sqkm and it is located at a depth of 1,450 metres.
The story of Zohr dates back to 2012, when the field's 15 exploration were put up for tender. Perforating offshore oil wells in the Mediterranean Sea had never produced solid results in the past, but when a new opportunity arose, Eni had to quickly decide whether to bid for the tender. Monitoring revealed that a reservoir was concealed in Block 9 and the decision was made to enter the fray.
In August 2015, Zohr turned out to be a sensational discovery.
In 2016, Zohr was the focus of a process that led to minority stakes in the Shorouk concession being sold to BP and Rosneft; the Russian company received 30% and the British giant 10%.
Recently, the deposit is testament to the success of Eni's dual exploration model, previously used off Mozambique's shores, an area divided up between Eni, CNPC, and Exxon Mobil.
